Utility-Scale Battery Storage in Austria

A utility-scale battery storage system, also referred to as a grid-scale BESS, is a stationary battery installation in the megawatt range. Unlike residential storage for photovoltaic systems, utility-scale assets connect directly to the high-voltage grid and serve grid stabilization, energy trading and integration of renewable generation. Typical power ratings range between 10 and 200 MW.

Austria intends to source all of its electricity from renewable sources on a balanced basis by 2030. Wind and solar generation, however, are not constant. Battery storage compensates for these fluctuations by absorbing surplus energy and releasing it when needed. Independent studies project a need for several gigawatts of storage capacity by 2030 to ensure supply security as the share of renewables continues to rise.

With more than 30 projects in development and 54 MW already under construction, the company has the highest project maturity among Austrian BESS developers.

Utility-scale batteries generate revenue from multiple sources simultaneously, an approach known as revenue stacking. These include ancillary services markets (FCR, aFRR), wholesale arbitrage in day-ahead and intraday trading, peak shaving to reduce load peaks, and grid services. Algorithmic optimization combines these revenue streams in real time.

Utility-scale battery storage projects are structured as infrastructure assets with long-term revenue perspectives. Income comes from both regulated and market-based sources. Falling battery costs, rising grid volatility and regulatory tailwinds, including the 15-minute settlement introduced in Austria in October 2025, continue to improve the underlying economics. Specific return expectations depend on project status, financing structure and market development.

Blackvolt manages a total portfolio of approximately 2.5 GW. Of this, 54 MW are under construction, 251 MW are ready to build, and 950 MW are in the late-stage pipeline. The portfolio spans sites across multiple Austrian federal provinces and combines in-house development with selective M&A opportunities.
